How much does a small business website cost?

Typical 2026 price ranges for a small business website, from website builders to freelancers and agencies, plus running costs and how to get a quote.

The short answer

As a rough guide in 2026, a website builder you set up yourself costs about $15 to $50 a month. A freelancer or independent developer typically charges $1,500 to $10,000 for a small business website (about £500 to £4,000 in the UK), and an agency $6,000 to $35,000 or more (about £3,000 to £30,000).

Where a site falls in those ranges depends on what it has to do. Most of the price is time: designing the pages, writing or shaping the content, building the features and testing everything before launch. A five-page site with a contact form costs far less than one with online booking, a shop or member logins.

These are typical market prices, not Crashielab’s. Every Crashielab project is quoted separately.

What you are paying for

  • Design. A custom design made for your business takes longer than adapting a template, but it fits your brand and your customers better.
  • Number of pages. Each page needs a layout, content and testing. A page for each service also gives search engines more to find.
  • Content. If your text and photos are ready, the build moves faster. If they need writing or sourcing, that is extra work, from you or from someone you pay.
  • Features. Forms, booking, galleries, online payments, a shop or logins each add design, building and testing time.
  • Editing. A CMS lets you update the site yourself, which costs a little more to set up but saves paying for every small change later.
  • Search and analytics. Setting up page titles, descriptions, a sitemap and analytics helps people find you and shows you what works.
  • Support. Help after launch, and a handover that explains how everything works.

The main ways to get a website

There are four common routes, and each one trades money against time, control and how closely the site fits your business.

A website builder you set up yourself. The cheapest way to start, at roughly $15 to $50 a month (from about £10 a month in the UK). The real cost is your time, and you are limited to what the builder allows.

A template set up by a freelancer. Often $1,500 to $4,000 (about £500 to £1,500 in the UK). Quicker and cheaper than a custom design, and a good fit if your needs are simple. Your site may look similar to others using the same template.

A custom site from an independent developer. Roughly $3,000 to $10,000 for five to ten pages (about £1,500 to £4,000 in the UK). Designed and built around your business, with one person responsible from start to finish. Costs more than a template, usually less than an agency.

An agency. Roughly $6,000 to $35,000 or more (about £3,000 to £30,000 in the UK). A team covering strategy, design, writing and development. Useful for large or complex projects, and usually the most expensive option.

An online shop usually costs more than a site that only presents your business, from about $5,000 (around £3,000) with a freelancer and well beyond that with an agency.

These ranges come from price guides published in 2026 by web designers and comparison sites. Prices vary by country and by project, so treat them as a starting point, not a quote.

Running costs to plan for

Building the website is only part of the cost. After launch, you will usually keep paying for:

  • A domain name, such as yourbusiness.com: about $10 to $20 a year (£10 to £15)
  • Hosting, which keeps the site online: about $5 to $15 a month for basic hosting, or $30 to $75 a month for managed WordPress hosting
  • Any paid plugins, fonts or services the site relies on
  • Updates and maintenance: often $50 to $200 a month if someone else does it (about £50 to £150), or your own time

Ask for these to be listed in your quote, so there are no surprises later.

How to get an accurate quote

The more a developer knows about your project, the closer the quote will be to the final price. Before you ask, write down:

  • What your business does and who your customers are
  • The pages you think you need
  • Any features, such as booking, payments or a shop
  • Two or three websites you like, and why
  • Whether your text and photos are ready
  • When you need the site to be live

A good quote should come as a written scope listing the pages, features, timeline and price, so you can compare like with like.

How Crashielab prices a website

There is no fixed price list, and the ranges above describe the wider market rather than Crashielab. Every project starts with a free email conversation, with no phone calls, and the price is shaped around what your business needs. You get a written scope before any work begins.

As a guide to timing, a landing page takes about 1 week and a full multi-page website takes 3 to 5 weeks.

Questions

How much does a small business website cost on average?
As a rough guide in 2026, a freelancer or independent developer typically charges $1,500 to $10,000 for a small business website, and an agency $6,000 to $35,000 or more. A website builder you set up yourself costs about $15 to $50 a month. Your own quote depends on what the site needs.
Why don’t many web developers publish fixed prices?
Two websites with the same number of pages can take very different amounts of work, depending on the design, the content and the features. A quote based on your actual project is more accurate than a price list.
What should I prepare before asking for a quote?
A short description of your business, the pages you think you need, any features such as booking or a shop, a few websites you like, and whether your text and photos are ready.
Are there costs after the website is built?
Yes. Plan for a domain name, hosting and any paid plugins or services every year, plus time or budget for updates and maintenance.
